Antioxidants
are any substance that works to prevent or repair damage done by free-radicals, the
uncontrolled oxidations that cause damage to cells. The most generally recognized
antioxidants are vitamins C and E, the provitamin A called Beta Carotene and the mineral
selenium. Becoming more widely known are a class of antioxidants called proanthocyanidins,
into which grape seed and pine bark extracts fall. Some of this latter class of
antioxidants are 20 times more powerful than vitamin C and 50 times more powerful than
vitamin E when compared as antioxidants. Proanthocyanidins, while not a replacement for
vitamin C (or vitamin E), perform some of the same functions as vitamin C and are
therefore regarded as vitamin C sparing. Antioxidants should be a serious consideration
for anyone who is exposed to chemicals or who lives in an area with pollution of the air,
water or soil.
