The
B vitamins are essential for the health of nerves, skin, hair, eyes, liver and mouth.
B-Complex vitamins are also considered necessary to energy production. The B vitamins work
as a team, and are generally used in combination, often with two or three times more of
one than another used for specific disorders.
Vitamin B1, also known as thiamine, is a vitamin necessary to the circulatory system.
Thiamine affects energy levels, growth disorders and is necessary for proper muscle tone
of the digestive system and the heart.
Vitamin B2 also called riboflavin, is utilized in red blood cell formation, production of
antibodies and normal cell function. B2 is believed to factor in the prevention and
treatment of cataracts. Riboflavin also aids oxygen use by the tissues, helps the uptake
of iron and vitamin B6 and may help to prevent or repair the damage of carpal tunnel
syndrome.
Vitamin B3 is necessary for proper circulation and the health of the skin. Also known as
niacin, B3 is used in the proper function of the nervous system, in the digestive system
and in the metabolism of carbohydrates, fats and proteins. Niacin is widely used to
decrease cholesterol levels in the bloodstream.
Pantothenic acid, vitamin B5, has been nicknamed the stress vitamin. It is required by all
the cells in the body with the highest concentrations being in the organs. B-5 is used for
normal function of the gastrointestinal tract.
Vitamin B6, also called pyridoxine, assists in maintaining normal sodium and potassium
balance and inhibits the formation of homocysteine. Carpal tunnel syndrome has been linked
to a deficiency in B6.
Vitamin B12 or cyanocobalamin, is used in cellular formation and promotes cellular
longevity. B12 is required for proper digestion and absorption of foods, synthesis of
protein and metabolism of fats and carbohydrates.
Also included in the B complex are biotin, choline, folic acid, inositol and PABA
(para-aminobenzoic acid). Biotin, PABA and inositol are used in the production of healthy
skin and hair. Choline is utilized in nerve transmission and metabolism. Folic acid is
best known for its role in proper fetal nerve cell development.
The B vitamins work as a team and are a supplement to consider for those who have to deal
with the daily stresses of life.
