Calcium
is the most abundant mineral in the human body, constituting up to 2% of total body weight
with 99% of that calcium being located in the bones. Calcium is not only used for the
building and maintenance of the skeletal structure, its necessary for muscle
contraction, blood clotting, neurotransmitter release and regulation of the heartbeat.
Insufficient calcium intake also has found to be a contributor in high blood pressure and
muscle cramping. Osteoporosis, the best known condition related to low calcium intake
affects more than 20 million people in the United States. A condition caused by excessive
bone loss, osteoporosis is the direct cause behind at least 1.5 million fractures each
year, 250,000 of these are hip fractures which are fatal in between 12 and 20 percent of
cases. Calcium and its co-factors, including magnesium and vitamin D, which aid in
absorption, are important nutrients to consider for anyone interested in supplementing
their diet.
